POKOTABI / Eeyan
和み処 ええやん
Located in Nagasaki, Toshima Ward, izakaya Eeyan serves a versatile range of small plates to accompany beer and sake, from seared bluefin tuna crown and cheek steak to Otokuni bamboo shoots and classic karaage.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Slender paper menu strips line the wall, setting an easygoing tone as soon as you settle into a seat at the counter. Tucked into an alleyway in Nagasaki, Toshima Ward, a short walk from Shiinamachi Station, Eeyan is a low-key izakaya where guests can nurse a drink without ceremony.
What catches the eye first is the careful handling of seasonal produce and fresh seafood. Pacific bluefin tuna is served not only as an assorted sashimi platter, but also in preparations highlighting lesser-known cuts: lightly seared crown (noten), pan-seared cheek steak, and simmered jaw (ago), each displaying distinct variations in fat and texture. Seasonal touches appear throughout the year as well, including simmered wakatakeni and crisp tempura made with bamboo shoots from Otokuni in Kyoto, fresh broad beans boiled to order, and firefly squid sautéed in garlic butter.
Alongside the seafood dishes, the house fried chicken (tori no karaage) enjoys a steady reputation among regulars. Nibbling on the crisp chicken alongside a beer or a preferred cup of sake makes for simple, hearty satisfaction. The kitchen also turns out a varied assortment of smaller fare, such as chicken simmered with tomato and cheese, a natto omelet, and bean sprouts tossed in a garlicky peperoncino style, making it easy to tailor an order to the mood of the evening.
Seating includes an L-shaped counter as well as tables, suited equally to a quiet solo drink or an unhurried night out with companions. The shop is closed on Sundays and operates Monday through Saturday from 18:00 until 0:00 late at night. A fondness for good music and the host's warm hospitality help round out its welcoming neighborhood feel.
